An escapement comprises two coaxial escape wheels 13, 16, Figs. 1 and 2, interconnected by a spring 26 for relative movement limited by stops 28, 31 extending from the wheel 13. The teeth 17 of the wheel 16 have locking and impulse faces 18, 19, and the teeth 14 of the wheel 13 has locking faces 15 engageable by pallets 21 (not shown) on an escape lever when the two escape wheels are moved relatively against the bias of the spring 26, the arrangement being such that when the wheel 13 is driven to cause successive pallet engagement of the locking and impulse faces 18, 19, the impulse is limited by pallet engagement of a locking face 15 when excessive driving force causes relative movement of the two escape wheels against the bias.
