939,448. Thermal switches; gravity switches. STEVENS MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. March 29, 1962 [April 3, 1961], No. 12134/62. Class 38 (5). A combined thermostat and tilt switch, for use in domestic electric heaters, for example, comprises two spring blades 14, 15 carrying contacts 21, 22, respectively, which are normally urged into mutual engagement. A bimetallic strip 23 carries an insulator tip 24 which passes through an aperture 25 in blade 15 to engage the blade 14 and open contacts 21, 22 at a temperature which is predetermined by adjustment of the position of blade 15. This adjustment is effected by rotation of a calibrated knob 35 which moves a threaded shank having an insulator tip 33 abutting the strip 15. A pendulum 38 is pivoted on the end of strip 15 and hangs freely in the vertical position. When the device is tilted the upper end of the pendulum 38 cams the end of strip 14 to lift contact 21 away from contact 22 whatever the setting of knob 35. The pivot axis of pendulum 38 may be transverse to strip 15 (Fig. 4, not shown) and the end of the pendulum may be shaped to function with the contact blades vertical (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively, the pendulum may have a hemispherical member seating in a cup on the blade (Fig. 6, not shown). The pendulum 38, or at least the cam end part, is of insulating material.
