Abstract

933,693. Mobile platforms for workmen. WHARTON ENGINEERS (ELSTREE) Ltd. April 20, 1961 [Jan. 20, 1960], No. 2020/60. Class 20 (2). A platform 6 for workmen is mounted on a boom 4 which is pivotable about a pivot 40 on a turntable 10, the platform being maintained horizontal during raising by links 45 and steps 51, Fig. 7, also being similarly maintained horizontal and providing access to the platform at all stages of raising. The steps 51 are pivoted at one end between the two members 42 forming the boom 4 and are pivoted at the other to links 52 pivoted at either end to the turntable and the platform. The platform 6 is rotatable by means of a hand wheel and endless chain on a turntable on the frame 5 by which it is pivotally mounted on the end of the boom and links 45. Rollers on the turntable engage above, below and on the circumference of a machined ring 8, Fig. 4 (not shown), on the base, two further rollers one engaging the top of the ring below the boom and the other beneath the ring opposite the boom assist in taking the weight of the boom. Mounted on the turntable 10 are an engine and hydraulic pumps for raising the boom by rams and turning the turntable either way by an hydraulic motor. The rotation of the turntable may be by hand and may be limited by stop valves. A decelerator valve prevents dangerous pressures in the hydraulic system due to the momentum of the turntable if the control valve is abruptly closed. The turntable is held by a brake automatically controlled by the control valve. A hand pump may be used to operate the rams for raising the boom. A ratchet, Fig. 12 (not shown) prevents collapse of the boom. The boom and turntable may be controlled from the platform 6. The apparatus is mounted on a railway truck 1.
