Abstract

928,225. Bookbinding machines. R. HEPP. July 17, 1959 [Aug. 29, 1958], No. 24589/59. Class 16. [Also in Group XIX] A bookbinding machine wherein consecutive signatures of a book are separated one by one from a stack (see Group XVI) and deposited on a conveyer which conveys the signatures in series to a stitching and gluing device, is provided with electrical counting mechanism (see Group XIX) for registering the number of signatures passing along the conveyer and with means, which is preset according to the number of signatures in the book to be bound, responsive to the counting mechanism for causing the bookbinding machine to repeat its work-cycle upon the count reaching the predetermined number. The counting mechanism is advanced step-bystep by a switch 29, operated by a cam 26, on each revolution of a shaft 24 driving the mechanism separating the signatures from the stack. This latter mechanism is deactivated for one work-cycle upon the count reaching said predetermined number, so that the last signature of one book is spaced along the conveyer from the first signature of the following book. The counting mechanism triggers off a gluing device 23 to glue, for example, the second and last signatures of a book. A photo-electric cell 33 positioned along the conveyer, energizes a coupling magnet to stop the feed, on detecting the absence of a signature. In order that the space between the last and first signatures of succeeding books should not stop the feed, the circuit of the photo-electric cell is automatically broken after the third counting pulse and not closed again until after the fourth counting pulse (a separated signature taking four working strokes to reach the photo-electric cell). Specification 775,833 is referred to.
