Abstract

927,554. Valve gear; driving gears. STANDARD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 5, 1962, No. 8354/62. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXI] In a motor vehicle transmission system, an engine mounted at one end of the vehicle drives a transmission shaft at a lower speed than the engine speed the transmission shaft being connected to a change speed gearing at the other end of the vehicle and through which the drive is transmitted to the wheels. The engine may comprise a crankshaft 10 driving an output shaft 11 through gears 16, 17 and 18, Fig. 1, the output shaft 11 passing through a tube 26 in the engine sump 24 and being connected through a universal joint 30 to a transmission shaft 31, Fig. 7, which is connected through a clutch 47 to a gearbox 52, the output shaft of which is connected to a differential gear 58. The clutch, gearbox and differential gear may form a single unit connected to the vehicle and the driven wheels of the vehicle may be independently suspended. In a modification, Fig. 2, the crankshaft drives the camshaft 32 through gears 37, 38 and 39 and the camshaft extends rearwardly of the engine and is connected by the universal joint 30 with the transmission shaft 31. In Fig. 4, the crankshaft 41 of an inclined engine 40 is connected through gears 42, 45 and 44 to an output shaft 11 connected by the universal joint 30 to the transmission shaft 31. The transmission shaft is connected through clutch 47 with the input shaft 46 of the gearbox 52, Fig. 5, which connection may include a train of gears, the gearbox comprising a mainshaft 48 supported by bearings 50 and 51 and being connected to an output shaft 49, the input shaft 46 being integral with one part 53 of a gear cluster 53, 54.
