Abstract

Polymers containing methacrylo-cycloimide units, which may be N-substituted are made by reacting a polymer containing units of the formula: <FORM:0926269/IV(a)/1> wherein X represents an oxygen atom or a group = NR in which R represents hydrogen or an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, with a compound of the formula R1NH2, R1, which is different from R when X represents the group = NR, being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or cycloalkyl group. Polymer starting materials are homopolymers containing cyclic methacrylic anhydride or methacrylocycloimide units, which latter may be N-substituted, and copolymers containing such units together with units derived from methyl methacrylate, acrylic esters, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile styrene and vinyl and vinylidene chlorides. Reactant compounds specified are ammonia and methylamine. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of water, a polyhydric alcohol or an excess of amine.
