Abstract

917,892. Fusible cut-outs. COLE Ltd., E. K., and COX, V. J. May 26, 1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 19138/60. Class 38 (1). The fusible element 1 of an electric fuse is cooled mainly by vaporization of the surrounding dielectric liquid 5 and as the current in the element approaches the rated fusing current bubbles of vapour are formed around the element and virtually inhibit further cooling, thus allowing the element to gain heat quickly and melt. The liquid may be distilled water, with or without antifreeze, methyl alcohol or a liquid fluorocarbon. The element 1 comprises a thin film of silver or tin deposited on a mica sheet. The fuse advantageously protects semi-conductor devices against sudden large overloads.
