Abstract

914,124. Ventilating aircraft. NORMALAIR Ltd. Oct. 18, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 36859/59. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] Air bled from the engine compressor 1 of a supersonic aircraft is cooled by expansion turbine 5 and the evaporator 7 of a compression refrigerating system and is then supplied to cabin 8 through pipe 9, at least part of the air being recirculated. As shown, all the air is recirculated and the cabin has humidifying and purifying means 44, 45. Alternatively tolerable conditions are maintained by constantly replacing foul air with fresh air. As shown, the bled air is first cooled in exchanger 3 by ram air expanded in turbine 12 driving a compressor 15 exhausting spent air to atmosphere. Turbine 5 drives a fan 11 which recirculates the cabin air through pipe 10. The refrigerant compressor 17 is driven by a turbine 23 supplied with ram air. The refrigerant condenser 18 is cooled by ram air expanded in turbine 25 driving a compressor 29 exhausting spent air to atmosphere. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) part of the spent cabin air passes in series through a heat-exchanger, a turbine and a second heat-exchanger, the heat-exchangers serving to cool bleed air; the refrigerant compressor is driven by the expansion turbine driven by the bleed air.
