906,795. Drafting apparatus. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. March 14, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 9515/60. Class 120 (2). In apparatus for drafting a number of slivers side-by-side and then combining them into a single sliver, to maintain the count of the combined sliver should one of the components fail, the speed of one of the pairs of drafting elements is arranged to be changed through a two-way clutch. As shown, detectors 312, one for each sliver, are in circuit with a clutch 18 operable electromagnetically to couple one or other of two driven sprockets 16. 17 of different diameters to the shaft of the lower deliveryroller 10. A timer 36 ensures that the correction is delayed until the broken sliver is leaving the drafting-zone; also, the affected detector may be arranged to stop the carding machine producing the broken sliver, and to give a signal to normalize the draft when the broken sliver is replaced.
