Abstract

901,733. Control systems for heating resistors. JACKSON INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 13, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 5320/59. Class 38 (4). A heating element, e.g. a boiling-plate 2, is connected by a wire 7 in series with an adjustable energy regulator 1 which embodies a heater coil 3 for a bi-metallic element 4 carrying a contact 5 associated with a contact 6. A switch 9 so linked with the regulator control that it can only be closed when the regulator is set to give maximum input and a thermostatic switch 10 incorporated in the plate 2 are connected in series with each other and in parallel with the regulator 1. In operation, when it is desired to heat the boiling-plate rapidly, the regulator 1 is at maximum setting, the contacts 5, 6 and the switches 9, 10 are closed, and the plate is subjected to maximum input. The operating current is split between the wires 7 and 8 and it is arranged that the magnitude of the current passing through the heater coil 3 is insufficient to operate the regulator. The plate 2 thus heats up to a temperature determined by the thermostatic switch 10. When the switch 10 opens, full current passes through the heater coil 3, causing the regulator to operate to give a safe predetermined mean input. If the regulator is subsequently regulated to give a low mean input, the switch 9 is automatically opened so that the switch 10 has no effect should it close at a lower temperature.
