A tobacco filler formed and retained by suction on the undersurface of a perforated conveyer band 58, as described in Specification 895,733, engages the paper web 103 of a continuous-rod machine at a band suction cut-off point C.O. where the web is curved in crosssection so that the filler is laterally controlled to prevent sideways expansion during and after transfer to the web, which runs on a garniture tape 106 at the speed of the band 58 and, as it approaches the band, is prevented by an increasinglycurved guard spring 110 from blocking air holes 109 in the downwardly tapered and mutually convergent sides 58a of the band channel. The garniture trough 108 has a correspondingly increasing curvature. On the band 58, the filler has at least half and preferably two-thirds of the density of the final cigarette rod, and after transfer it is further prevented from volume increase by a compression shoe 112, acting as a scraper for the band 58 and having an undersurface passing from flat to trough shape, and by the garniture tongue 113 leading to the web folders 114.
