Abstract

892,700. Delivering sheets. HARRIS INTERTYPE CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1959 [Aug. 21, 1958], No. 28009/59. Class 100(1) The delivery drum of a printing press has a diameter which is a multiple of the diameter of the impression cylinder. As shown a multicolour offset printing press has two or more printing units each comprising plate, offset and impression cylinders 16, 17, 18. Sheets to be printed are held on the impression cylinders by grippers 25 which receive a sheet at each revolution of the impression cylinders. Transfer cylinders 23 having grippers 24 are disposed between the impression cylinders 18 of adjacent printing units to transfer sheets therebetween, the diameter of the transfer cylinders being double that of the impression cylinders. A delivery drum 26, having the same diameter as the transfer cylinders 23 is mounted on a shaft 22<SP>1</SP> adjacent to the impression cylinder of the final printing unit. Sprocket wheels are mounted on the shaft 22 at each end of the delivery drum, the pitch diameter of the sprocket wheels being less than the diameter of the drum. Gripper chains are guided round the sprocket wheels and convey the printed sheets to a pile support 40, the sets of grippers 32 on the chains being spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the circumference of the impression cylinders 18. The shaft 22<SP>1</SP> is driven through gears 27, 28 from the impression cylinder 18. Owing to the dimensions of the impression cylinder 18 and drum 26 the trailing edge of a printed sheet leaves the nip of the cylinders 17, 18 before the grippers holding the leading edge of the sheet are clear of the peripheries of the sprocket wheels.
