[Also in Group XXIV] A machine for rolling dough comprises a pair of superposed cylinders 2, 3 which are driven in opposite directions and which may be reversed, a driven endless conveyer 15, 16, on the feed and delivery sides of the machine, and a drive mechanism which connects the cylinder and the conveyer drives including, a primary clutch 20, Fig. 5, operating with or without slip depending on its direction of rotation so that during the rolling operation the drive member on the delivery side operates without slip while the drive mechanism on the delivery side operates with slip, each of the two primary clutches being provided with secondary clutches 29 which operate without slip when engaged, and means which hold the secondary clutch in engagement when the cylinders are not acting on a lump of dough. As shown, Fig. 2, when the cylinder 3 is lowered by the absence of dough between the cylinders, an interconnecting eccentric 10 in turn lowers a shaft 8. This movement pivots an arm 43, Fig. 4, about a pair of fulcrums 42 thereby moving the dog clutches 30 into engagement with a pinion 33 whilst continuing to engage the primary clutch 22. Thus the cylinder 2 drives the rollers 13, 14, in a positive manner through a train of gears 17, 19, 22, 29 and 30. In a modification to control the amount of slip of the feed conveyer the springs 25, Fig. 5, of the clutch 22 are removed so that the clutch is either locked whilst rotating in one direction or completely free whilst rotating in the opposite direction, the idlers 19 being replaced by an adjustable single plate clutch 19, 51 (not shown). Thus the amount of slip required can be controlled by the adjustable plate clutch 19, 51 (not shown). In a further modification, the dog clutches 30 can be actuated by an interconnecting yoke which can be attracted by an electro-magnet which is controlled by a pilot switch operated by the vertical movement of the shaft 8.
