Abstract

The invention comprises organo manganese pentacarbonyls of formula R(CO)xMn (CO)5 where R is a univalent hydrocarbon group which may be substituted with nonreactive, non-hydrocarbyl substituents and x is 0 or 1. Typical substituents include fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine atoms, nitro, hydroxyl, aldehyde, nitrile and carboxyalkyl or carboxyaryl groups such as carboxyethyl, carboxybutyl and carboxyphenyl. Specified compounds include benzoyl-, benzyl-, phenyl-, methyl-, acetyl-, stearoyl-, trifluoroacetyl-, and trifluoromethyl manganese pentacarbonyls. They may be prepared by reacting an alkali metal manganese pentacarbonyl with an organic halide, organic sulphate, acid halide or acid anhydride. The alkali metal manganese pentacarbonyl may be prepared by reacting an alkali metal with manganese pentacarbonyl in an ether medium and may be used in situ without isolation in the preparation of the compounds of the invention. Suitable ethers are those with a boiling point above 25 DEG C., especially cyclic ethers such as tetrahydrofuran and dioxane. The acy manganese pentacarbonyls so prepared may be pyrolysed to give the corresponding hydrocarbyl manganese pentacarbonyl, which in its turn may be reconverted into the acyl derivative by reaction with carbon monoxide under pressure at a temperature between 20 DEG C. and 200 DEG C. The compounds of the invention may be used as anti-knock fuel additives (see Group III).ALSO:Organo manganese pentacarbonyls of formula R(CO)xMn(CO)5 where R is an unsubstituted or substituted univalent hydrocarbon group and x is 0 or 1-in particular, methyl manganese pentacarbonyl CH3.Mn(CO)5 -may be added as antiknock agents for gasoline fuels.
