Abstract

A composition suitable for the manufacture of bearings comprises by volume: 5% to 35% of graphite or carbon; 5% to 35% of a powdered hard copper alloy; 0% to 10% of a filler; and the balance, not less than 40%, being polytetrafluoroethylene. Specified alloys of copper are those containing tin, zinc, aluminium, or silicon and having a greater hardness than pure copper. Fillers mentioned are silica, glass fibre, kieselguhr and iron wool. Preferred compositions contain 17% to 23% of graphite or carbon, 17%-23% hard copper alloy, and 55%-65% of polytetrafluoroethylene with or without a filler, e.g. 3%-5% of glass fibre. According to the Provisional Specification, the composition may comprise 2 1/2 %-50% graphite; 2 1/2 %-50% hard copper alloy; 0%-10% filler; and not less than 25% polytetrafluoroethylene.
