Abstract

852,541. Electric tests. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 18, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No. 28206/57. Class 37 In apparatus for gauging the thickness of a material such as a zinc coating, the " Q " factor of an inductive circuit positioned at a predetermined distance from the surface of the coating is detected. Fig. 1 shows a coil wound on a core and the central limb of which is spaced from the plate 4 to be gauged. In Fig. 4 this coil is shown as 21 which, with capacitor C1, constitutes the toned circuit of transistor TR1 the negative resistance characters two of which produces oscillations. The amplitude of the oscillations is controlled by the " Q " of the inductive circuit which is said to be dependent on coating thickness. The voltage developed at the emitter load is amplified by TR2 and is of sufficient amplitude to prevent a multivibrator TR3, TR4, capable of producing an audible tone, from operating. If the oscillator out-put falls the audible tone is heard in an earpiece. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement in which all the elements except the earphones are mounted in the exploded assembly shown. A brass face-plate 8 is provided with free rolling ballswhich space the assembly from the work under test. Inside head 10 is the core assembly 14 while the electronic circuit is mounted in aluminium tube 6 on a tay board 16. Batteries 17 are mounted on a "Perspex" (Registered Trade Mark) block. A switch is provided on the end of tube 6 and a flexible lead connects the assembly to the earpiece.
