In a steering column 1 Fig. 1 adapted for flanged attachment to a gear-box 2 with alternative intermediate flanged spacers 47 Fig. 4 providing an adjustable length of column, the steering shaft 6, gear change shaft 29 and brake and clutch operating rods 20, 26 are slidable telescopically in sleeves 8, 31 on guide bearings 22, 23 &c. to permit all the controls to be raised or lowered with the column 1. 'The column 1 is further adapted for a reversal in direction of travel by the provision of supports 42 for the seats 43 in two positions, and the provision of reversing shafts 4, 4<SP>1</SP> with pinions 3 for alternative attachment of the steering wheel 5. The steering shaft 6 extends telescopically within a steering worm sleeve 8 and is rotatably connected therewith through a profiled bush 7. The steering knuckle shaft 11 may carry cam members 12 in addition to the steering arm 13 and adapted to assist the steering by operation of the brakes 17 through rollers 14 on the brake operating levers 15. The gear change shaft 29 is slidable for adjustment within a sleeve 31 operating the gear shaft dog 32 and clamped to the shaft 29 through a clamping sleeve 30. The brake lever 15 and clutch rod 28 are operated through the push rods 20, 26 which are actuated by arms 38 Fig. 7 on pedal operated shafts 24, 27 and engageable with grooved sleeves 40 clamped to the push rods 20, 26. Provision is made for attachment of pedals 25 Figs. 8, 11 on the shafts 24, 27 according to the direction of driving. A pedal 25 may be alternatively rigidly keyed to a shaft 24 on one side or freely mounted on the shaft 27 on the other side and connected to operate the shaft 24 through linkages 45, 46.
