Classes 98(1) and 98(2) In a photographic printing method the intensity and contrast of the projected image are adjusted so that a standard exposure time may be given on a standard high contrast printing material by first adjusting the intensity of the projected image so that the brighest parts are of a predetermined intensity, and then superimposing on the projected image a uniform illumination whose intensity is varied so as to give a predetermined intensity in the darkest parts, and making the exposure with the combined illuminations. The intensities in the brightest and darkest parts may be measured by means of a photoelectric meter. The intensities of the projected image and uniform illumination may be adjusted by means of resistances in the lamp circuits, by diaphragms or by variable density filters. The uniform illumination may be supplied from an auxiliary lamp or from the main projection lamp. The predetermined maximum and minimum intensities are chosen as the end-prints of the exposure scale of the printing material.
