Abstract

843,200. Making helically finned tubes; welding by fusion. RICHARDS & ROSS Ltd. July 10, 1958 [July 11, 1957], No. 21977/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making helically finned tubes comprises rotating an internally cooled core tube about its axis, feeding metal strip thereto to be wound therearound by rotation of the tube and welding the strip continuously to the tube by an inert gas shielded arc welding torch. A core tube 10 is rotated by a chuck 11 of a lathe, being supported at its other end by a hollow centre 12 on the tail stock. Cooling fluid is circulated through a pipe 14, the centre 12, a pipe 15 extending axially within the tube 10, and a pipe 16. Metal strip 17, after its free end has been tack welded or clamped to the tube 10, is guided to the tube by a grooved roller 21 on a slide 22 adjustable on a saddle 19 moved axially of the tube, e.g. by a lead screw. An arc welding torch 18 is carried by a mounting 25 angularly and linearly adjustable in two directions at right angles on the saddle 19. The strip 17 is fed under the tube 10 and the welding point may be in the horizontal plane of the tube axis or slightly above. Welding wire electrode is fed to the torch 18 through a cable 26 carrying the welding current, and carbon dioxide, argon or helium arc shielding gas is supplied through a hose 27. An earthed current return cable 24 is connected to the slide 22, which also carries a scraper, Fig. 2 (not shown) to remove weld spatter from the tube. The tube 10 may be vertical or inclined. The strip feed and welding torch may be stationary and the tube 10 rotated and moved axially.
