Abstract

837,509. Magnetic amplifiers. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 21, 1958 [April 29, 1957], No. 12541/58. Class 40 (9). The output from a magnetic amplifier to a load is obtained from a direct-current power source, the circuit of which is gated by transistors so as to provide a train of pulses, the duration of each pulse being determined by the amplifier control signal. As shown in Fig. 1, a direct current source 51 and a load 59 are connected to the amplifier load windings 13, 23, and each load winding is energized in turn by completion of a current path through a transistor 60, 70, the transistors being made conductive alternately by alternating pulses applied over a transformer 100 from a source 110. The amplifier includes control windings 12, 22 which act in the opposite sense to the load windings, and the duration of the unidirectional pulses in the load is inversely proportional to the control signal applied to terminals A, B. In a modification, Fig. 3, each load winding is connected in series with a separate direct current source 52, 53, and since the two sources are of opposite polarities a train of alternating pulses is established in the load. An alternative embodiment is shown in Fig. 2 comprising two similar amplifiers each with its own direct-current source 54, 55 and gating transistors 60, 70, 80 90. The amplifiers are connected in push-pull relationship to a common load, and include a bias circuit comprising windings 14, 24, 34, 44 which is arranged to disable one or other amplifier depending on the polarity of the control signal applied to windings 12, 22, 32, 42. In a modification, Fig. 4, the polarities of the control windirgs 22 and 32 and the secondary windings 108, 109 of the transformer 100 are reversed and an alternating pulse output is established in the load as a result.
