A plug and socket coupling for industrial use has the resilient spring-pressed socket contacts 50 (Fig. 7) guarded by a shutter disc 65 slidable in the insulating socket body 40 against spring 67, the disc 65 being locked by nylon pins 73 (Fig. 5) which are released when the member 75 or 80 in the plug part pushes down sleevelike cam member 70 during insertion of the plug. Contacts 6, 7, 8, &c., which may be moulded into the plug enter vertical slots in socket 40, wrong engagement being prevented by making earth contact 8 larger than the others. When sufficiently inserted the plug is turned so that the upper shoulders of the plug contacts go under steps 48 in the slots. On withdrawal of the plug the disc 65 returns to its closing position against shoulders at the top of the socket bore and pins 73 return to the locking position. Energization of socket contacts 50 may be effected only when the plug is introduced into the socket by an electromagnetically controlled switching unit 82 operated when entry of the plug closes switch 95. The switching unit 82 may be enclosed in a separate housing remote from the socket. Moisture &c. is excluded from the plug by a soft rubber sealing pad.
