Abstract

A catalyst composition for polymerizing alpha-olefins comprises a mixture in a dry liquid saturated hydrocarbon solvent, of titanium or vanadium trichloride with triisobutyl or triphenyl aluminium the molar ratio of the aluminium compound to the trichloride being from 0.5 : 1 to 2.5 : 1. Specified solvents are benzene, xylene, toluene and isopropyl benzene.ALSO:An alpha-olefin is polymerized by contacting it at a temperature between 20 DEG and 110 DEG C. with a composition comprising a mixture, in a dry liquid saturated hydrocarbon solvent, of either titanium or vanadium trichloride with either triisobutyl or triphenyl aluminium. Specified olefins are propylene, 1-butene, 4-phenyl-1-butene, and styrene, while benzene, xylene, toluene and isopropyl benzene.
