Abstract
814,885. Tennis courts and the like. TOMPSETT, R. S. Aug. 26, 1955 [May 26, 1954(2)], Nos. 15468/54 and 15469/54. Class 132(1) [Also in Group X] Playing surfaces for tennis courts and the like are made by laying, on a foundation, a layer of fine chippings, fibre and a binding solution comprising a mixture of linseed oil and a compatible natural or synthetic resin. The chippings may be brick, sand, granite or the like which pass a three eighths inch mesh. Preferably the fibre is coconut fibre, though teazle may be used. The layer may include granular cork or powdered soft rubber. With small chippings, e.g. of less than one eighth inch mesh, without dust, the surface looks like matt linoleum. The longer the staple length of the fibre used, the less is required and the sooner it may be rolled. Pigments may be included and the surface may be further treated, after it has at least partly dried, by rolling and spraying with binding solution. Before this has dried, a thin layer of fibre in lengths from one eighth to three quarters of an inch and suitably coloured may be added. The surface may be further modified by applying a thin dressing of fine chippings and, when finished, the surface is suitably marked. In an example 20 parts by volume of sand of less than one eighth mesh was mixed with 4 parts of coconut fibre and 3 to 6 parts of soft rubber powder or crumbs, green pigment and about 3 parts binder consisting of 1 part natural resin and 2 parts linseed oil. The surface was laid, rolled and allowed to dry for several days. before being marked. The two Provisional Specifications describe also the use of a bitumatic or tar preparation for binding.
