Abstract

A method of reducing troublesome effects of salts deposits in the tube system of a steam generator which normally operates at or above the critical point of the working medium comprises first preparing the water by a so-called total salts elimination treatment and thereafter, by means of an additional ion-exchange, replacing, predominantly by potassium ions, the metal ions of the traces of salts still present in the prepared feed water. In one example the so-called total salts elimination treatment is effected by passing the water through a cation exchanger and an anion exchanger in series. The additional ion-exchange is then provided by a cation exchanger which has been regenerated by a potassium compound, preferably the chloride or sulphate. Alternatively the water may be purified by precipitation softening followed by vaporisation, the resulting steam being passed through a condenser and the resulting condensate being passed through a potassium cation-exchanger before being fed to the generator. In a closed circuit, water from a feed water tank is pumped to a steam generator whence steam passes to a turbine and thence through a condenser, the condensate being returned to the feed water tank: in this instance a potassium cation-exchanger is interposed between the condenser and the feed water tank.
