Abstract

776,916. Ratchet winches. VHLIG, G. Nov. 23, 1955, No. 33604/55. Class 78 (5). A portable winch comprises cable drum 12, ratchet-wheel 14 secured thereto, and handle 70 which is pivoted at 10 and carries pawl 40 and is reciprocated to drive the drum by engagement of said handle pawl with said ratchet wheel. For permitting load C to fall under its own weight handle pawl 40 is displaceable outwardly to a second position free of ratchet-wheel 14 by means of thumb-wheel 48, movement of the latter displacing spring 44, which spring influences said handle pawl. In said second position, the pawl (upon reciprocation) engages spring 26 which controls frame pawl 18, so that spring 26 simultaneously forces pawl 18 and pawl 40 respectively away and towards the ratchet wheel, which latter thus comes under the control of pawl 40, and load C is then lowered by clockwise rotation of the handle.
