Abstract

<PICT:0768273/IV(b)/1> Crude terephthalic acid containing p-toluic acid is purified by the process of the parent Specification, modified in that the purification is conducted continuously by feeding the aqueous solution of crude terephthalic acid into a crystallizing zone and allowing the crystals to settle while the mother liquor passes on. In a preferred embodiment, hot aqueous terephthalic acid solution enters crystallizer (2) via valve (1) and is cooled, the crystals falling through tube (4) against countercurrent wash water from heater (6), the washed terephthalic acid being obtained as slurry from receiver (8) while mother liquors from (7) pass to two similar crystallizers in series from which crude terephthalic acid, for recycling, and p-toluic acid are obtained respectively.
