Abstract

748,264. Tubular heat-exchangers; heattransmitting media. FOSTER, WHEELER, Ltd. Nov. 24, 1952 [Oct. 23, 1951], No. 24774/51. Classes 64(2) and 64(3). In an indirect heat exchanger in which one of the heat-exchanging fluids flows through tubes which are-surrounded by a good heat-conducting " barrier " fluid through which heat exchange takes place, the barrier fluid is circulated in a closed circuit through means for detecting the presence in it of one of the heat-exchanging fluids. The barrier fluid may be any substance of high thermal conductivity which is fluid under operating conditions and the use of liquids or gases is mentioned. Examples of liquids given are mercury and low melting alloys of bismuth. In a preferred arrangement, the barrier fluid flows through annular spaces 34 between concentric pairs of heat-exchange tubes 20, 22. In the form shown, one heat-exchanging fluid flows through the shell 10 and over tubes 20 and the other fluid flows through the tubes 22, heat being exchanged through the tube walls and through the barrier fluid flowing in a closed circuit which includes end spaces 36, 32 and the annular spaces 34 between each pair of concentric tubes. The barrier fluid enters and leaves the apparatus through inlet and outlet connections 38, 40. U-tubes may be used instead of the straight tubes shown. Tube proportions are given. Specification 199,379, [Class 64(iii)], is referred to.
