744,260. Knitting. CLAY, P. E. F. June 16, 1954 [May 20, 1953], No. 14198/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 74 (2). By means of a two-feed machine, alternate courses of a tubular elastic fabric, e.g. a stocking, are knitted of an elastic yarn tending to twist clockwise and the intervening courses of an elastic yarn tending to twist counter-clockwise. Tendency for the fabric to twist and streakiness are thus minimized. Each yarn may comprise an elastic core wrapped, the one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise, with a single helical covering of a thermo-setting, or thermo-plastic yarn, particularly nylon, the core having an initial diameter of, say, 0.008 inch, being stretched during the wrapping so that the resultant yarn has a diameter not exceeding 0.005 inch. The wrapping may be of 15-60 denier. At one feeding position there are provided known picker mechanism and interchangeable feeders, the one supplying one of the elastic yarns during round and round knitting and the other an inelastic textile yarn during reciprocating knitting of heel and toe pouches. The leg and foot of a stocking are knitted of the elastic yarns and the welt, e.g. an inturned welt, at one or both feeding stations, of textile yarn or elastic yarn or yarns. The leg may be shaped by controlling the feeding tension of the elastic yarns or by means of known stiffening mechanism. Two lines of mock fashioning marks may be provided in the leg.
