Abstract

Chlorine-containing polyether polyepoxides are made by reacting polychlorhydrin ethers of polyhydric alcohols in acetone solution with solid caustic soda in amount corresponding to about 65-85 per cent of that equivalent to the total chlorine content of the polychlorhydrin. The polychlorhydrin ethers may be made by reacting epichlorhydrin with polyhydric alcohols and a preferred starting material is made by reacting 3 mols. of the chlorhydrin with 1 mol. of glycerol. Only about two thirds of the total chlorine content of the polychlorhydrin ethers is in an "active" form to react with caustic soda to produce epoxides i.e. is on a carbon atom adjacent to a hydroxyl group, and preferably just this equivalent amount of alkali is used. At the end of the process excess caustic soda is advantageously neutralized by the addition of an acid such as hydrochloric acid before solvent removal. In an example caustic soda is added in portions to an acetone solution of the preferred starting material so as to maintain a temperature of 47-60 DEG C. the product finally being heated at 50-60 DEG C. for a short time before isolation.
