Abstract

The invention comprises quaternary ammonium formaldehyde sulphoxylates, particularly those of the following types:-(1) compounds in which 4 different or the same hydrocarbon groups are attached to the N, including those in which 2 or 3 of the groups are represented by the residue of a heterocyclic ring; (2) compounds in which 2 of the groups on the N are represented by the residue of a heterocyclic ring containing also oxygen, the other two being similar or different hydrocarbon residues; (3) compounds in which one of the groups attached to N is an acidylamino alkyl group, the others being as above; the products may be obtained by the action of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide which is strong enough for the product not to be hydrolysed in aqueous solution, on a basic zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate with heating, or by the action of normal zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, or an aqueous solution or suspension of a normal or basic formaldehyde sulphoxylate of a metal which forms an insoluble hydroxide, carbonate or sulphate, on an aqueous solution of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, carbonate or sulphate; or by the action of quaternary ammonium salts on metal formaldehyde sulphoxylates, such that in alcoholic solution, a less soluble metal salt is precipitated; or by the reduction of quaternary ammonium formaldehyde bisulphite; or by the action of formaldehyde on a quaternary ammonium hydrosulphite; or by the action of an alcohol soluble quaternary ammonium iodide on tetramethylammonium formaldehyde sulphoxylate in alcoholic solution. In examples the formaldehyde sulphoxylates of tetramethylammonium, the corresponding tetraethyl, phenyl-trimethyl, cetyl-trimethyl, cyclohexyltrimethyl, dicetyldimethyl, phenyl benzyldimethyl, and 2-stearamidoethyltrimethyl, ammonium derivatives and the formaldehyde sulphoxylates of methylpyridinium, N : N-dimethylpiperidinium, N : N-dimethyl-1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydroquinolinium, N : N - dimethyl morpholinium, and cetyl pyridinium are described; the tetramethyl compound is prepared by each of the methods described above. A table showing the solubilities of several of the products in a number of organic solvents and water is given.
