Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0708065/IV (b)/1> wherein R is alkyl, R2 is H or an alkali metal atom or ammonium group, and D represents a phenylene group, which may be substituted, are prepared by hydrolysing compounds of the above general formula, wherein R2 is an acyl group, in the presence of an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide, giving compounds wherein R2 is an alkali metal atom or ammonium group, and then acidifying, giving compounds wherein R2 is H. 2-a -Mercaptopropionamido-6-ethoxybenzthiazole is prepared by adding aqueous sodium hydroxide to 2-a -acetylthiopropionamido - 6 - ethoxybenzthiazole dissolved in acetone, diluting, filtering, and adding hydrochloric acid. 2 - a - Mercaptopropionamidobenzthiazole 2 - a - mercaptopropionamido - 6 - methoxybenzthiazole, 6 - chloro - 2 - a - mercaptopropionamidobenzthiazole, and 2 - a - mercaptobutyramidobenzthiazole are similarly prepared. Compounds of the above general formula, wherein R and D are as above and R2 is an acyl group, are prepared by condensing an amine of the general formula <FORM:0708065/IV (b)/2> with an acid chloride of the general formula <FORM:0708065/IV (b)/3> in the presence of an acid binding agent. 2 - a - Acetylthiopropionamido - 6 - ethoxybenzthiazole is prepared by adding a -acetylthiopropionyl chloride to a mixture of 2-amino-6-ethoxybenzthiazole, dioxane, and quinoline. 2 - a - Acetylthiopropionamidobenzthiazole, 2 - a - acetylthiopropionamido - 6 - methoxybenzthiazole, 6 - chloro - 2 - a - acetylthiopropionamidobenzthiazole, and 2 - a - acetylthiobutyramidobenzthiazole are similarly prepared. a - Acetylthiopropionyl chloride is prepared by reacting together a -acetylthiopropionic acid and thionyl chloride. a - Acetylthiobutyryl chloride is similarly prepared. a - Acetylthiopropionic acid is prepared by acetylating a - mercaptopropionic acid with acetyl chloride, and a -acetylthiobutyric acid by acetylating a -mercaptobutyric acid with acetic anhydride.
