Abstract

Improved polysiloxanes are made by admixing with an incompletely condensed polysiloxane, having an average per silicon atom of 1 to 1.7 organic radicals such as methyl, ethyl, phenyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl, methylsilyltriacetate in amount of 7 to 90 per cent by weight of the mixture and thereafter continuing the condensation of the resin, e.g. by allowing the mixture to stand at room temperature or by heating to a temperature, e.g. above 80 DEG C. The triacetate may be added with or without solvents such as benzene, toluene, ethylacetate, amylacetate, white spirit, cyclohexanol or mixtures thereof. Pigments, such as titania, iron oxide and carbon black, fillers and other colouring agents may be added, provided they are compatible with acetic acid. The pigments may be previously waterproofed by treatment with a chlorsilane. The compositions may be used as adhesives for paper, cardboard, asbestos, &c. enamels for aluminium wire, paints, e.g. for protecting aluminium, waterproof coatings, and insulators, and prior to the heat treatment may be applied to ceramics, glass, aluminium, iron plate, cardboard, coatings of synthetic resins and plastics such as cellulose acetate and superpolyamides. Examples are given.
