Abstract

638,960. Internal shoe-drum brake actuators. GIRLING, Ltd. April 29, 1948, No. 11814. [Class 103 (i)] In an internal shoe-drum brake, the actuator mechanism comprises a pair of opposed slidable guided tappets 12, 13 which are formed with toothed racks 16 adapted to be engaged by complementary racks 23 on a pair of spaced blocks 22, which on actuation of a member 17 at right angles to the brake back-plate are first brought into engagement with the tappets and are then urged apart to move the shoes outwardly into engagement with the drum. As shown, the blocks 22 are coupled to the actuator rod by a pair of inclined toggle links 20. The links 20 may, however, be replaced by a single cranked plate spring member and the mechanism is also shown modified for use with the well-known ball or roller and inclined rod type of actuator. The engaging teeth of the racks 16 and 23 are of ratchet form so that the tappets 12, 13 may slide under the blocks 22 during the releasing movement. The invention is particularly applicable to brakes of the type described in Specification 519,787 in which the shoes are in light rubbing contact with the drum during release.
