Abstract
630,021. Percussive drills. BROOM & WADE, Ltd., and HAUSFELDER, L. Dec. 3, 1946, No. 35823. [Class 124] The feed of a rock drill is automatically controlled in accordance with the resistance to drilling by means of a coupling between a feed screw and a reversible air motor driving it, the coupling comprising two interengaged rotary members one of which may be moved axially against a spring on changes in torque in the feed screw and which has a connection to a speed control for an air motor. As shown an air motor drives a screw 10 through a worm 12 and gear 11, the worm 12 being movably mounted on splines 17 against a spring 18. An increase in torque in the screw 10 produces axial movement of the worm against the spring and, by means of a double ended lever 64 one end of which operates in a groove 28 in the worm, an air valve 21 is closed against a spring 24 thus reducing the speed of the air motor. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a collar, having a quick, four start thread co-operates with a nut acting against a spring to operate the air valve. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a pinion with an internal helical thread moves a lug in a slot in a hollow shaft against a spring to operate the air valve. There is also described a pendulum compensator for operation of the drill in different positions.
