Abstract

Biotin, represented by the formula <FORM:0606196/IV(b)/1> is obtained by treating 2-(41-carboxybutyl)-3 : 4-diamino-tetrahydrothiophene as an addition salt thereof with phosgene preferably at a temperature of about 0 DEG C. and in an aqueous alkaline solution, e.g. a solution of an alkalimetal base or an alkali metal salt of a weak acid. Compounds of the above formula are obtained as racemates of stereoisomers by using the corresponding racemic mixture as starting material. In examples, cis-, trans-allo- and trans - epiallo - 2 - (41 - carboxy - butyl) - 3 : 4 - diamino-tetrahydrothiophene acid sulphates are converted into biotin.
