Abstract
600,555. Aerial bomb fuzes. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., MORPETH, W., and HESELTINE, J. C. W. Aug. 18, 1943, No. 13486. [Class 9 (i)] An aerial bomb is electrically detonated before reaching ground or target, by completion of the firing circuit by an impact member located at the forward end of one of a number of telescopic members which are projected in advance of the bomb casing by a propellant charge on release of the bomb. When the bomb is released, a pin 11, Fig. 2, is withdrawn to free an impact member 8a coupled through a copper diaphragm to a switch 8 located at the forward end of the inner tube 3 of the telescopic system 3, 4, 5 these tubes being provided with split or deformable locking rings which prevent closure of the telescopic system once it is extended. The tube 3 is sealed at its forward end by a plug 3a and when released by removal of the pin 11 moves forward under the influence of a spring 12, Fig. 3, thereby releasing locking members 18 from a spring-urged striker 13a which thereupon strikes a percussion cap 14 and ignites a delay train 15 which relays to a cordite propellant charge 16 whose function is to extend the telescopic system. The movement of the striker body 13b, Fig. 4, is used to displace a shutter 25 to release a safety switch 24 to prepare a firing circuit through a battery 22a, cartridge contact 26-and electric tube 26a for initiating detonation, the firing circuit being completed by the switch 8, Fig. 2, and cable 26c on impact. According to a modification the safety switch is provided with a plunger and is closed by the pressure of the gases used to extend the telescopic system. The telescopic system may be located as an extension at the forward end of the bomb instead of being housed therein. Specification 600,557 is referred to.
