Abstract

Fuel blocks are prepared from powdered carbonaceous material, e.g., charcoal, coke, coal, graphite, or a mixture thereof, by mixing it with an aqueous solution or suspension of a material possessing agglomerating properties when cold, a material having bonding properties when heated, and a wetting and dispersing agent and moulding the mixture to the desired shape. The cold-binding agent may be dextrin, glue, gum, casein or natural or synthetic resin, while the hot-binding agent, which, when heated, forms a bonding network of coke or caramel, may be a monose, polyose, or a product resulting from the hydrolysis of wood. The amount of cold-binding agent can be reduced provided the agent used is capable of binding in the cold and of coking when heated. The wetting and dispersing agent is preferably one that does not cause foaming, e.g., sulphonated condensation products of aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives with aldehydes, alkyl and aralkyl naphthalene sulphonates, sulphite - cellulose lyes, sulphonated derivatives of fats, water-soluble products of ethylene oxide and insoluble higher fatty alcohols, liquorice, and products from the hydrolysis of albuminoids. If lyes containing lignosulphonic acids are used the pH value must be adjusted to 6.8 or over. A preservative and a metal salt serving as a catalyst can be added. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, a wetting agent which produces a certain amount of foaming, e.g., saponin, can be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, electrodes, retorts, muffles, and crucibles are formed from powdered carbonaceous material, e.g., charcoal, coke, graphite, or mixtures thereof by mixing it with an aqueous solution or suspension of a material possessing agglomerating-properties when cold, a material having bonding-properties when heated, and a wetting and dispersing agent, and moulding the mixture to the desired shape.
