Abstract

553,830. Power measuring devices. SQUARE D CO. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15419. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1940. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] Comprises a speedometer device driven by a shaft, a torque-measuring device incorporated in the shaft, displaceable elements each connected to one of the devices and variable coupling means to couple said devices to a multiplying mechanism working an indicator. A speed device driven from the engine by helical gear 72 and a flexible shaft 76 comprises flyweights 13, 14 carried by toggle levers 15, 16, 17, 18. The levers 15, 17 are pivoted to a collar 19 on the shaft 20. The levers 16, 18 are pivoted to a collar 21 movable against a spring. A further restraint on the collar is provided by a blade spring 24 whose movement is limited by adjustable stops 25 to give a satisfactory speedcharacteristic. The collar 21 is engaged by the forked end 28 of the long arm 26 of a bellcrank lever the other arm 33 of which engages a pin 32 extending from a frame 30 pivoted about the axis 31. Sliding on a frame rod 29 parallel to axis 31, and also on a rod 34 connected to a toothed quadrant 36 is a ratio slider 38 which is moved by the free end of a Bourdon tube 77 moved by pressure fluid according to the torque. The movement transferred to the needle 10 is compounded of torque and speed and is therefore proportional to the power. The torque component is derived in the following manner. The engine crank shaft drives a propeller shaft 44 through a reduction gear comprising a gear 47 keyed to the crank shaft driving a set of planetary gears 49, 50 carried by arms on the propeller shaft. The sun gear 51 is loose on the shaft but has arms 56, 57 linked to pistons 58, 59 located in cylinders 62, 63 filled with pressure fluid supplied by a pipe 65. The two cylinders are connected by a pipe 64 and this pipe is connected by a pipe 70 to the Bourdon tube which also has adjustable reinforcing stops 78 to give the required characteristic. In a modification the frame 30 is moved by the Bourdon tube and the ratio-slider by the speed responsive device. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 two additional modifications are described in which the speed responsive device is of the drag type in which an armature is dragged around against spring influence by a rotating magnet and the flux is varied by the movements of the Bourdon tube. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
