519,207. Curling fibres ; waving hair. CHAMBERLAIN, N. H., and MACDONALD STEAM WAVING, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1938, No. 27165. [Class 15 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XIV] A process for the permanent waving of hair or other keratin containing fibres of the kind in which the fibre, wound on a curler, is treated with heat in the presence of moisture and a volatile alkali, is characterized in that a dry powder capable of forming a volatile alkali under the influence of heat and moisture is incorporated in a sachet to which water or an aqueous solution of a non-volatile alkali is applied, e.g., by dipping prior to application to the curled fibre. The sachet may comprise a sheet 1 of waterproof paper folded at 2, a liner 3 of cellulose acetate sheet, oiled silk, or other waterproof material, a pocket 4 of absorbent material for containing the chemical, and a flap 5 of absorbent material which, when used, may be dipped in water and folded over the pocket 4. Materials suitable for use comprise ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium carbamate, ammonium borate, ethylamine carbonate, dimethylamine bicarbonate and metallic nitrides such as magnesium nitride.
