Abstract

511,365. Automatic firearms. JOHNSON, M. M. Feb. 16, 1938, No. 4845. Convention date, Jan 5. [Class 119] An automatic tirearm of the type having a breechbolt fitted with an extractor and breech mechanism permitting automatic recoil of the bolt when the firearm is discharged, has means for imparting a kick to the bolt substantially as it leaves the firing chamber, in order to facilitate extraction. The invention is described as applied to a firearm having a receiver 1 and a barrel 2 which has a short recoil in the receiver, the barrel being screwed to a toothed ring 14 with which teeth 15 on the breech-bolt 5 may be locked or disengaged by angular movement of the bolt. The bolt has a roller 20 guided in a longitudinal groove in the receiver so that during the recoil of the bolt and the barrel the bolt is rotated and unlocked, the bolt then recoiling alone without further rotation. The initial rotation of the bolt, to enable the roller 20 to enter the longitudinal groove is effected by a cam piece 16 on the bolt engaging a corresponding cam surface 23 on an abutment 24 carried by a sliding cover 25 on the receiver, the cover being secured by a screw 27 in such position that the abutment 24 contacts with a fixed abutment 28 on the receiver. A heavy plunger 10 guided longitudinally by the roller 21 has a cam face 18 engaged by the cam 16 on the bolt, so that during the initial recoil of the barrel and bolt the turning of the bolt imparts longitudinal motion to the plunger 10, relatively to the bolt, whereby, substantially at the instant when the bolt is unlocked and commences to recoil independently of the barrel, the rear end of the member 17 strikes a shoulder 29 on the bolt, this impact ensuring that the extractor 6 in the bolt will start the withdrawal of the empty cartridge case. The plunger 10 is linked at its rear end to the member 11 coupled to the recoil spring, so that at the end of the return movement, the cam face 18 may rotate the bolt into locked position. An ejector 7 with a nose 30 in a groove in the breech-bolt is rocked by a cam formation at the fore end of the breech-bolt, to eject the cartridge case laterally. A handle 9 is fitted for manual control of the breech-bolt. Specification 486,907 is referred to.
