Abstract

507,513. Elastic yarns ; knitting- machines. UNITED STATES RUBBER PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 8, 1938, No. 3926: Convention date, Feb. 10, 1937. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] An elastic yam comprises a core of elastic material and a textile cover formed of at least two yarns knitted tightly about the core in opposite directions so that the knitted loops of one yarn interlock with the knitted loops of the other yarn. The loops of the several yarns may be arranged to interlock at widely spaced points over the circumference of the core and maintain the core under substantial tension and when the cover comprises two yarns the corresponding portions of the loops of the two yarns cross the core at diametrically opposite positions. The yarn may be provided with one or more additional covers wound, braided, or otherwise formed on the knitted cover. The elastic yarn shown in Fig. 3 may be formed in an ordinary warp knitting- machine, every other needle of which may be removed to provide room for the core covering operation, positively-driven rollers 29, 30, Fig. 1, with an intermediate roller 31 being provided for taking up the elastic yarn as it is produced and the spools containing the core material 14 and the covering yarns 33, 34 being provided - with. brake means 16, 23 for supplying the core and yarns to the knitting point under proper tension.. The guide bars 20, 27, 38 carrying the eyes through which the core 14 and yarns 33, 34 pass to the needle' 10, and support 13 are reciprocated longitudinally and rocked laterally so that the eyes 25 loop the yarns about the raised needle and the eye 18 clears the eyes 25 ; by using a pair of needles for each core the elastic yarn shown in Fig. 4 may be formed.
