Abstract
473,841. Rotary plug valves. SAUNDERS, P. K. April 20, 1936, No. 11239. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] In a rotary plug valve, a valve seat 14 of rigid or substantially rigid material such as metal or fibre co-operates with a curved surface on the plug 12 and is backed by resilient means 16 projecting from a recess 17 in the valve casing 11. The seat has limited free lateral movement in its own plane relative to the backing means 16 and is withdrawable together with the plug with deforming the backing means. The rotary spherical valve 12, Fig. 1, has both seat rings 14 backed by rubber washers 16. The seat rings 14 may be withdrawn together with the valve 12, on removal of a plate 18. The valve stem comprises a bronze or steel part 21 integral with the valve member 12 and connected to an inner cast iron portion 22 to which a handle 23 is secured. The valve stem is resiliently supported by a thimble-like rubber sleeve 24 clamped at the top between the stem portion 21 and a washer 26 and at its bottom flange between the valve casing 11 and a detachable cover 19. The sleeve 24 is backed by rings 28. The torque of the sleeve 24 is resisted by a resilient washer 30 on a support 31 so that the valve can be set in any position. Flanges 29 guide the seats 14 during withdrawal. In the rotary cylindrical valve, Fig. 5, the seats are formed as shoes 14 backed by rubber washers 16 of rectangular outline. The resilient connection between the cover 19 and the valve member 12 comprises a series of rubber, rings 34 interspaced by metal or other rings 35 and compressed by the cover during assembly.
