Abstract

467,155. Welding magnesium &c. by fusion. MAGNESIUM ELECTRON, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1937, No. 2311. Convention date, March 3, 1936. Addition to 463,434, [Group II]. [Class 83 (iv)] In a process of welding magnesium and magnesium alloys as described in the parent Specification involving the use of a flux consisting predominantly of one or more halides of alkali or alkaline earth metals together with an acid or acid salt which is less volatile than any halogen hydracid derived from the halides and which is capable of combining with the alkali or alkaline earth metal radicle on dissociation of the halide and which is also of such a nature that neither it nor any reaction product causes corrosion if left in contact with the work, a viscous solution of the acid component is separately applied, before welding, around or upon and around the seat of the weld and the halide component is subsequently applied to the seat of the weld. Saline inclusions in the work in the vicinity of the oxidizing zone of the plane as well as at the seat of the weld, are thus avoided, particularly in welding stout castings. The acid component may consist of the several phosphoric acids or solutions of phosphates or oxides in such acids and may extend to a distance of about 2 or 3 cms. beyond the seam. Any residues of saline substances and phosphoric acid are removed after welding by intensive washing.
