Abstract
Trifluoromethylarylsulphonic acids are manufactured by treating a trifluoromethylaryl, which contains no amino or nitro group but which may contain other substituents, e.g. a halogen atom or an alkoxy or acylamino group, with sulphur trioxide, if desired in the presence of sulphuric acid monohydrate as a diluent. The products are intermediates for the manufacture of dyestuffs. In examples: (1) trifluoromethylbenzene is treated below 0 DEG C. with fuming sulphuric acid containing 65 per cent of sulphur trioxide and after standing the mass is introduced into a saturated solution of sodium chloride, yielding the sodium salt of the trifluoromethylbenzenesulphonic acid, probably containing the sulphonic acid group in m-position to the trifluoromethyl group; the barium and aniline salts are also described; (2) sulphur trioxide is passed at ordinary temperature into trifluoromethylbenzene and the product is worked up as in (1); (3) 1-trifluoromethyl-4-chlorobenzene is treated as in (1) to produce the sodium salt of the sulphonic acid, probably 1-trifluoromethyl-4-chlorobenzene-3-sulphonic acid; the barium salt is also described; (4) sulphur trioxide is passed into 1-trifluoromethyl-3-methoxybenzene below 0 DEG C., and after standing the mass is introduced into a saturated solution of sodium chloride rendered alkaline with sodium carbonate, producing the sodium salt of 1-hydroxy-3-trifluoromethylbenzenesulphonic acid and a small amount of the sodium salt of 1 - methoxy-3-trifluoromethylbenzenesulphonic acid; (5) fuming sulphuric acid containing 65 per cent of sulphur trioxide is added to a solution of 1-acetylamino-3-trifluoromethyl-benzene in tetrachlorethane at room temperature, and the mass is heated to 145 DEG C., cooled and introduced into a saturated solution of sodium chloride, yielding the sodium salt of 1 - acetylamino - 3 - trifluoromethylbenzenesulphonic acid. Specification 395,227 is referred to. 1 - Trifluoromethyl - 3 - methoxybenzene is obtainable by methylating the corresponding hydroxy compound.
