458,349. Sound-film and like speedcontrolling devices. AGA-BALTIC RADIO AKTIEBOLAG, Lidingo, near Stockholm. June 15, 1936, No. 16652. Convention date, June 13, 1935. [Class 40 (ii)] Apparatus for recording sound on or reproducing from films or the like, including a flywheel 5 and two tensioning members such as jockey rollers 3, 9 situated on each side of the flywheel and forming loops in the film, is characterized in that the tensioning members are connected to each other by an energy absorbing coupling, such as a dashpot 17 and links 18, 19, in such a manner that alterations in tension (increases or decreases) due to oscillations in one of the loops are accompanied by inverse alterations in tension (decreases or increases respectively) in the other loop. By this means, low frequency speed variations as the film passes over the roller 6, to which the flywheel is connected are damped out. High frequency variations are damped out by the action of the flywheel, the mass of which is great relatively to that of the other moving parts. For this reason, the rollers 3, 9 and the arms 11, 12 carrying them are preferably made of light metal. The arms, as well as the rollers 3, 9 and the guide rollers shown are mounted on ball bearings. The links 18, 19 are resilient, to assist the attenuation of high frequency oscillations. Instead of a dashpot, an eddy current brake, a frictional shock-absorber, or the like may be used. The invention is applicable not only to optical but also to magnetic and mechanical recording and reproducing apparatus.
