Abstract

389,552. Brakes. BENDIX BRAKE CO., 401, North Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A. Oct. 22, 1931, No. 29351. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1930. Addition to 378,542. [Class 103 (i).] In an internal-expanding brake wherein the operating member comprises a floating lever disposed within the drum and having cam members disposed between the ends of the shoes or other friction member, as described in the parent Specification, the anchor for the friction member is wedge-shaped and the ends of the friction member conform to the anchor. A pair of floating shoes 48, 50 pivotally connected by an adjusting member 56 to which they are held by a spring 58 have their free ends notched to conform to a wedge-shaped anchor 14 and have also rounded shoulders 66, 70 for engagement by cams 44, 46 upstanding from a floating-operating lever 36 which straddles the anchor and is disposed within the drum and actuated by a cable 40, kept taut in the released position by a spring 80 attached to the cam 46 and the shoe 50. Release springs 72, 74, 76 for the shoes extend therefrom to the anchor plate and to a projection 30 on the anchor 14. The spring 76 is stronger than the spring 74 so that when applying the brake the shoe 48 is first moved and its end slides along the anchor with a radial movement to engage the drum. With normal counterclockwise drum rotation, the shoe 50 does not leave the anchor and with clockwise rotation the shoe 48 does not leave the anchor. The objectionable click caused by the return of the shoes to the anchor is thus avoided. A retaining plate 32 for the shoes is secured to the anchor.
