[Class 59.] In a mill for grinding material in a liquid or semi-liquid condition comprising a fixed and a moving surface or two moving surfaces, the fixed or one of the moving surfaces embodies a series of surfaces some or all of which are individually adjustable and all are fixed to form a unit, the face of the effective surface being located at different distances from the opposing grinding surface. As shown in Fig. 1, as applied to a rotating disc a, the grinding bar d consists of laminations held in a member b by screws c, Fig. 2, and adjustable by screws x<1> bearing against a backing plate x which may be inclined, curved &c. to correspond to the shape of the grinding surface. The laminations, which may vary in thickness or width, are stepped and may have the upper edge bevelled at e, Fig. 3, to form recesses in which a pressure is built up by the material and mixing or agitating performed thereby. The bar may have a pivotal adjustment or may have endwise movement. As applied to a roller the effective edges of the laminµ are curved to conform to the surface of the roller. A number of grinding bars may be applied to a disc, the material being fed successively from one bar to the next. The discs may be mounted vertically or horizontally and may be flat, dished &c. One or more bars may be disposed in a hopper, the material after passing one bar being acted upon by another bar outside the hopper. The grinding bar may true up or be trued up by the opposing grinding surface. According to the Provisional Specification a stepped, solid grinding member may be used.
