[Class 103 (vi).] Each axle a of a railway vehicle is provided with inner and outer pairs of wheels b, d respectively, adapted to suit tracks of different gauges, either or both sets of wheels being so mounted on the axle as to be capable of being raised to and held in an inoperative position above the rail level. In the arrangement shown two inner and smaller wheels b are secured to the axle a, while two outer and larger wheels d are designed to be swung about an axis f<1> eccentric to the axle a either to a raised inoperative position, or alternatively to a lower operative position where they are secured to and rotate with the axle a. The axis f<1> is constituted by a tube adapted to be inserted into a sleeve f mounted loosely on the axle a, the latter and the sleeve f, during the swinging movement of the wheel, moving within a semicircular slot d<1 >in the wheel. Attached to the axle a is a disc or plate h having at diametrically opposite points two holes h<1> into which removable pins may be inserted so as to engage two holes d<2> in the wheel and to secure the wheel in its lower position to the axle. In addition, the plate h has a series of circularly disposed holes h<2>, into one of which and into the tube f<1> one of the pins, now removed from the holes h<1>, d2, may be inserted so as to permit the wheel to be swung upwards to the inoperative position, where it is fixed by pins engaging holes in the vehicle hornplates or similar fixtures. These wheel changes are effected at points e<1> where the outer rails e are depressed below the level of inner rails c, inclines e<2> leading to the normal level. According to modifications the wheels may be arranged to rotate on eccentrics secured to the axle, or, if desired, all the wheels may be adjustable and of the same diameter, and they may also be adjustable along the axle.
