Abstract

348,132. Heating and ventilating vehicles. BATES, A. H., 1401, North Court Street, Rockford, Illinois, U.S.A. Jan. 27, 1930, No. 2806. [Class 137.] Means for supplying warm fresh air to the interior of a motor vehicle comprises a heating radiator arranged within the vehicle body in circuit with the water cooling-system of the engine and means for conducting air, passing through the engine radiator, into the vehicle body through the heating radiator therein. The heating radiator 5 may be carried by the water supply and return pipes 9, 10, which are threaded into reinforcing castings disposed within the headers 13, 14, and pass through the dashboard 18, being clamped thereto by nuts 21, 22. Hose pipes 24, 25 connect the pipes 9, 10, respectively, to the motor head, where the water is hottest, and to the return connection 30 between the pump 32 and the engine radiator 31, a cock 28 enabling the circulation to be regulated. A shroud 6, attached to the back of the radiator 5, is secured to a short tube 16 passing through the dashboard 18, the air conduit 7 being clamped to the free end of the tube. The air current may be induced by disposing the funnelshaped orifice 8 of the conduit immediately behind the usual engine-driven fan 38, Fig. 1, or, as shown in Fig. 4, a separate fan 53, driven by an electric motor 54, may be arranged in the shroud 6. The conduit may derive heat from contiguity to the engine. A flap-valve 41 in the conduit, controlled by means of a wire or cable 42 passing through a flexible tube 48 to a pushbutton 44 on the instrument board or in front of the radiator, regulates the flow of air. An opening in the shroud, regulable by flap 57, Fig. 4, ensures circulation and warming of the air within the vehicle. In a modification, the tube 16 is braced by collars bolted to the dashboard and the tubes 9, 10 are diverted therethrough. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the electric motor and fan are carried by a bracket 55 clamped to one or both of the tubes 9, 10. In this form, the conduit may or may not be extended to be subject to the action of the fan 38.
