336,276. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 4, 1929. Fats and fatty oils, purifying.-Fats and fatty oils are freed from fatty acids by treatment with polyhydric alcohols e.g. at 150-300‹ C. and reduced pressure. The component of lower boiling point is led in vapour or mist form, if desired in admixture with an inert carrier gas or vapour such as hydrogen, nitrogen or water vapour, into the liquid or liquefied component of higher boiling point, kept at a temperature above the boiling point of the lower boiling component, the latter being introduced, if desired in the presence of catalysts or fillers and in a cycle, in such a rapid stream and in such an excess that the whole or greater part of the higher boiling com. ponent is converted into foam. Catalysts mentioned are metal soaps e.g. magnesium oleate, phosphoric acid and zinc chloride. Specification 163,352 is referred to.
